Counseling Mission and Values

Counseling Services Mission

  • To provide mental health counseling to registered students of Cal State 91³Ô¹Ï, with the aim of supporting student wellness, retention, and graduation.
    • We use a brief model in order to manage high demand in a way that is equitable and accessible.
    • Clinical services should be culturally sensitive, and visible to the student population.
  • To improve mental health awareness and wellness practices throughout our campus community.  Counselors provide training to campus partners, and preventative education to students.  Programming should pay particular attention to groups and individuals who are highest need and/or traditionally underserved.

Counseling Services Values

  • Hope - we are committed to cultivating an authentic sense that things can get better, by  helping students strengthen their locus of control.  We want students to leave our clinic with more hope than they had when they arrived.

  • Growth - we will facilitate students’ self-reflection and personal exploration, to help them understand their past, enjoy their present, and dream for their future.  We assume that growth is a constant process for our students, and for ourselves as professionals.  We intentionally cultivate learning, and evolution on our counseling team by ensuring that each member continually expands their expertise, enriches their practice, and elevates our collective impact.

  • Empathy - we intend to create both safe and brave spaces where students feel seen, heard and valued.  We strive to be voices of understanding and acceptance, making students feel a sense of belonging and trust.  We aim for every student to feel welcome, acknowledged, and genuinely cared for.

  • Social Justice - we will act as advocates on campus, especially for issues, individuals, and communities who have been marginalized. We will strive to build both awareness and action around both individual and structural inequities.

  • Community - we will work to give students a sense that they are not alone, and have access to support on campus that goes beyond any individual counselor or department.  We are committed to acting in partnership with high impact campus departments, and in championing mental health support so that each student can grow in mind, body, and spirit.

  • Courage - we will hold a strengths-based perspective on our students, and reflect their gifts and capacities back to them.  We will empower students to know their value and to use their voices.  As a team, we will also build our own capacity for courageous conversations, fostering a culture of honesty, growth, and integrity.

  • Flexibility - we are committed to adapting our approach to meet the unique needs of individual students and the broader campus community.

  • Inclusion - we recognize and celebrate both visible and invisible differences throughout our campus community. We offer multiple modalities for outreach, communication, and therapeutic services, so that each student can authentically engage with our clinic in a meaningful and accessible way.
