BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Cal State 91吃瓜 women's water polo team swept the second day of the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships on Saturday, topping Cal State Monterey Bay, 9-7, before downing Sonoma State, 13-10. The Pioneers (23-12) advance to Sunday's fifth-place game and will meet No. 5-seeded Santa Clara.

91吃瓜 trailed just once in the early game, a rematch of two meetings with the Otters during the regular season. The Pioneers opened scoring just 45 seconds into the match, as junior Liz Warren scored the first of her three goals on the day. After CSUMB evened the score and took a 2-1 lead with back-to-back goals, CSUEB closed the quarter with a goal from freshman Claire Pierce to tie things at two through eight minutes of play.

The second quarter was a different story for both teams, as the Pioneers out-scored the Otters 4-1, getting goals from Warren, Pierce, senior Jenna Casady and junior Danielle Comforti. Leading 6-3 at the break, 91吃瓜 continued to build on its momentum in the low-scoring third quarter, adding two goals to Monterey's one. Both Warren and Pierce scored their third goals of the game in the third period, giving the Pioneers an 8-4 lead heading into the final quarter.

Though the Otters fought back to score three in the fourth period, 91吃瓜 held on, adding another from senior Brianna Finney to cap the 9-7 win. Both Pierce and Warren paced the Pioneers with three goals in the game, while senior goalie Lauren Merrill made three saves to give CSUEB its second win of the season over the Otters. The win moved 91吃瓜 on to meet No. 7-seeded Sonoma State in the evening game.

The Pioneers and Seawolves met for the third time this season, vying for the chance to move on to the fifth-place game. The high-scoring affair saw the teams combine for 10 goals, three ties and two lead changes in the first quarter. After 91吃瓜 opened scoring with a goal from Warren early on, Sonoma State scoring three-straight to take a 3-1 lead. The Pioneers rallied back, going on a 4-1 scoring streak that saw Pierce score a pair, while Warren and Casady each added one to give CSUEB a 5-4 lead. The Seawolves finished the quarter with a goal with 12 seconds left to tie the game 5-5.

After taking a 6-5 lead on Pierce's third goal of the game early in the second quarter, Warren added her third to give 91吃瓜 a 7-5 lead before Sonoma State responded to cut the lead back to one. Pierce continued her hot streak, notching her fourth to put the Pioneers up 8-6, but committed a five-meter penalty that resulted in a Sonoma goal late in the half to give 91吃瓜 an 8-7 lead at the break.

A low-scoring third quarter saw the Seawolves tie the game twice and take a 9-8 lead before Warren and Casady scored a pair in the final two minutes of the period to put the Pioneers back up 10-9. From there, 91吃瓜 scored three more in the fourth, getting two from junior Jenna Gelet and another from Comforti to cap a 5-1 scoring run to end the game and give CSUEB the season sweep of the Seawolves.

Warren and Pierce led the Pioneers on the day, posting seven goals apiece, while Casady added another three. Comforti and Gelet each scored a pair to help move 91吃瓜 onto the fifth-place game.

The Pioneers will meet the Broncos for the fourth time this season, looking to pick up its third win of the season over Santa Clara and get redemption after a regular-season ending loss on April 17. 91吃瓜 posted its first-ever win over a nationally ranked team when it topped the then-No. 19 Broncos, 13-10, in the first weekend of the season, and downed SCU, 9-8, in February, but fell to Santa Clara on the road, 14-8, just two weeks ago.
